Hourglass Winery

Owned by Jeff and Carolyn Smith, Hourglass Winery released their first vintage in 1997. Their 4 acre Hourglass Vineyard, located just north of St. Helena, is one the great vineyard sites in the Napa Valley and earned its “hourglass” name due to its geographical location at the narrowing between the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains. The Smiths acquired the Blueline Vineyard in 2006 and from these two vineyards, they handcraft estate wines that are both rich and elegant. Tony Biagi took over winemaking duties in 2012 from Bob Foley.

Hourglass 2012 Blueline Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2012 Blueline Estate Cabernet Sauvignon announces itself with a lifted perfume of rose oil, pungent blackberry, cedar, and wet crushed stones that form a cascade of exotic aromatic layers. Rich flavors of blackberry pie, cranberry, and bittersweet dark chocolate form a lush and pure fruit expression to yield an expansive palate impression. Texturally refined, the 2012 Blueline Estate Cabernet derives an energy and tensional balance from its sustained underscore of minerality. Past vintages of the Blueline Estate Cabernet typically deliver wider and deeper black fruit flavors in their youth. All present here, yet the 2012 also lends dimensions of tangy red fruit layers to elicit even more nuance to its traditional markings. In all, this is one of the more complex vintages of Blueline Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Hourglass 2012 Blueline Estate Merlot

2012 was a particularly great vintage for Merlot at the Blueline Estate. Due to its early ripening characteristic, Merlot can be challenging in warmer vintages, but 2012 was very temperate, allowing for a longer, more metered season. The earlier picks gave us tangy red fruits and dark sour cherry while the later picks delivered rich blackberry fruit and deep supple textures. From these various lots, we assembled a Merlot blend with incredibly symphonic layers, balancing vibrancy with deep textural richness.

Hourglass 2012 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Our 2012 Hourglass Estate Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits balance and precision with a feline grace to match its power. Aromatically, hallmark camphor and mint are present, but more subtle than previous vintages. A high-toned rose petal scent at the bridge of the nose leads to a cascade of tangy red fruits that segues to bass notes of toasty wood smoke while a dark, earthy minerality of the iron rich Hambright soils underscores throughout. Well-knitted, classically structured tannins frame the center of the wine and provide a glimpse into its significant aging potential. Red fruit notes of pomegranate and dark sour cherry interweave with savory black fruit (black currant) to provide soft flesh around the focused core. Texturally, this wine maintains a beautiful balance between grip and silk; its deep richness is evident yet restrained by the tensional pull of a nervy natural acidity and earthy minerality that provide both lift and layered density. The extended finish allows for a long afterthought.
